YOUR SCORE
*While many people picture the homeless as middle-aged men rough on the streets, the 2016 Australian census revealed that 15,872 children under 12 are homeless on any given night, and the majority of people experiencing homelessness are female.
**While we might notice or think of the homeless as sleeping on the streets, they only represent 7% of all people experiencing homelessness in Australia. The majority live in severely over-crowded dwellings (44%) or in supported accommodation for the homeless (18%).
***A common perception is that homelessness in Australia is a choice, but that is simply not true. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness in Australia – experienced by 40% of people seeking help from homelessness services. Generally women, often with children, are forced to choose safety over sleeping in their own bed.
